Volunteers Needed for Inmate Book Club

The Outreach Committee is exploring the idea of replicating Carol Finlay’s “Book Clubs for Inmates” here in London at the Regional Detention Centre. We visualize teams of two volunteers leading two discussions each month (for groups of 6-8 inmates) for each chosen book, rotating month-to-month, depending on demand and availability. If the idea appeals to you, please contact John Thompson ( He can arrange for Ellen McKegney, Volunteer Services Coordinator at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre to come to

St. John’s and give us some idea of what this would involve. We hope to start the program in the Fall, but paperwork (including police checks) takes about six weeks and will need to be completed before then.
